Quoin Rock Shiraz 2015

Relentless.

Are big, burly red wines making a comeback? The recently releases Shiraz 2014 from Bot River property Luddite is pretty full-on (see review here) and so, too, is the 2015 from Quoin Rock in Stellenbosch.

Alcohol for the Stellenbosch wine is 15.1%. Maturation lasted 20 months in French oak, 56% new. Price is R600 a bottle. It’s pitch black in colour while the nose shows stewed fruit, molasses, malt, earth, pepper and spice. The palate is super-rich and almost syrupy in texture with a fiery burn to the finish. Whereas I think the Luddite 2014 works, the Quoin Rock could do with some more refinement.

Editor’s rating: 89/100.

Got some bottles of their Centaur Shiraz 2009, still waiting for the tannins to soften, will hopefully be awesome down the line but not yet.
