Raats Cabernet Franc 2014

Splendid.

Bruwer Raats of Raats Family Wines comments that 2014 was a cooler vintage facilitating longer hang-time and this has resulted in his Cabernet Franc from that year looking particularly statuesque.

From two Stellenbosch vineyards, one in Polkadraai and the other on the Simonsberg, the wine was matured for 18 months in French oak, 25% each in new, second-, third- and fourth-fill.

On the nose, red and black cherry, a hint of roses, a pleasant leafy quality, boot polish and spice. The palate meanwhile is full but shows great composure – the fruit is succulent and dense, the acidity fresh, the tannins subtle and fine. Price: R475 a bottle.

#WinemagRating: 94/100.
