Rall Cinsault 2015
By Christian Eedes, 8 July 2016
In a short space of time, Cinsault has become trendy but it has to be said we’re still some way off having a sense of what it’s best stylistic expression is – pick it early and it makes for wines with pretty aromatics and appealing fruit but no great structure or complexity; pick it later and the wine can become rather non-descript and listless.
Donovan Rall has done a good job with his 2015 from Darling fruit. On the nose, it shows raspberry through black cherry, some olive and a little scrub. The palate has pure fruit, bright acidity and very fine tannins – the wine has just the right amount of heft without becoming sweet or gloopy while the finish is gently savoury.
