Donovan Rall

Donovan Rall of Rall Wines.

The 2016 vintage was an exceptionally hot and dry vintage and therefore particularly challenging. Donovan Rall of Rall Wine explains his approach was to harvest at least some of the vineyards he works with earlier in order to ensure freshness in the resulting wine and this strategy has worked beautifully.

Rall Grenache Blanc 2016
Price: R260
From Piekenierskloof grapes. 80% fermented in concrete egg, 20% fermented on the skins in barrel. An enticing nose of flowers, peach and pineapple. The palate shows lovely fruit concentration combined with riveting acidity before a saline finish. Great mouthfeel – plump without being thick textured or listless. Has a real effortlessness about it.

Editor’s rating: 95/100

Rall White 2016
Price: R280
Approximately 60% Chenin Blanc, 30% Verdelho, 8% Viognier and 2% Chardonnay. A super-complex nose of potpourri, stone fruit, some yeasty complexity, a little earthiness and spice on the nose. Relatively rich and broad on the palate despite a moderate alcohol of 13%, the finish long and savoury. Nicely assembled and should please this wine’s many fans.

Editor’s rating: 93/100.

Rall Cinsault 2016
Export only.
From Darling grapes. 100% whole bunch fermentation. Wild strawberry, lavender and white pepper on the nose. The palate is light but intensely flavoured with a cracking line of acidity and pleasantly grippy tannins. Extraordinarily pure and focused.

Editor’s rating; 94/100.

Rall Red  2015
Price: R290
85% Syrah plus 10% Grenache and 5% Cinsault from the 2016 vintage (unofficially!).  Wild and brooding on the nose with notes of black fruit, olive, earth and a hint of fynbos. The palate is super-intense with a good core of fruit, fresh acidity and crunchy tannins. Has just the right amount of rusticity about it.

Editor’s rating: 92/100.
