Rudmatis Chenin Blanc 2022
By Christian Eedes, 19 December 2024
Jacques Erasmus, previously in charge of white wine production at Spier, joined Nabygelegen in Wellington at the beginning of 2021. Newly launched is the Rudmatis label, the word meaning “a red-haired man” as Erasmus unapologetically is.
The Chenin Blanc 2022 (R200 a bottle) is comes from the “best Coastal Region vineyards discovered discoveed as a winemaker over the past 20 years” and was matured for 14 months in 300- and 400-litre barrels.
The nose shows lemon, peach and apricot, spice and some yeasty character while the palate shows dense fruit with fresh acidity and a gently savoury finish. The texture is initially creamy but there’s some light grip to the finish. Rich, robust and full of flavour. Alc: 14%.
CE’s rating: 93/100.
