Game on.

And so Duncan Savage, previously winemaker at Cape Point Vineyards, has gone on his own with nothing to fall back on but his wits and guile. Luckily, his new releases are as accomplished as ever. Tasting notes and scores as follows:

Savage White 2015
Wine Cellar price: R195
44% Sauvignon Blanc, 36% Semillon, 11% Clairette Blanche and 9% Chenin Blanc. Yellow flowers, tangerine, white peach and apple on the nose. The palate is rich and full with a creamy texture and nicely coated acidity before a savoury finish. No longer made entirely according to the Bordeaux model, this is a sleek, suave wine.

Savage Follow the Line 2015
Wine Cellar price: Sold out.
57% Cinsaut, 26% Grenache and 17% Syrah.  Plums and cherries plus subtle notes of fynbos, spice and earth. The palate has particular fruit weight (despite an alcohol of just 13%) with bright acidity and relatively soft tannins.

66% Syrah, 15% Grenache, 11% Touriga Nacional and 8% Cinsaut. While not exactly brooding, the nose tends towards the darker end of the aromatic spectrum – a top note of lilies before black fruit, earth and spice. Remarkable fruit concentration, freshness and structure make for a serious and demanding wine. Intensely flavoured, well balanced and long.
