Seriously Old Dirt 2015

Seriously Old Dirt, the less ambitiously price, supposedly earlier drinking offering from Paarl property Vilafonté, tends to be made in the house style of being ripe and soft, the 2016 rating 88 and the 2018 87 in last year’s Cape Bordeaux Red Blend Report.

In fine fettle.

Drinking the not previously rated 2015 recently shows what an exceptional vintage this was. A blend of 43% Malbec, 29% Merlot and 28% Cabernet Franc, the nose shows dark berries, dried herbs, liquorice, earth and spice while the palate has good fruit definition and freshness and just the right amount of tannic grip, the finish long and dry.

CE’s rating: 90/100.

A well written and a clear argument to purchase a wine. As soon as possible. Thanks Roxan – I could not have said it in a more clear and concise way if I had Christian’s thesaurus clenched between my buttocks.

First time I tasted it was by chance at a SASA do about 4 years ago. Couldn’t find it anywhere until I was in Joburg last year at a tiny liquor merchant in Parktown North. Didn’t think twice taking it off the shelf.

I highly recommend this wine to anyone who enjoys a little resistance from a wine. I don’t mean that it’s difficult to ‘meet’ this wine; rather, that the wine is full, engaging and offers food for thought. (I totally intended that pun.)

Indeed, Christian, its a sterling example of vineyards harnessed to express the best of 2015.

    I thoroughly enjoyed drinking it.
