Sijnn White 2015
By Christian Eedes, 22 November 2016
It’s a little difficult to know what to make of the wines from Sijnn, David Trafford’s project near Malgas on the banks of the Breede River, as they are just so different to anything else out there. He recently showed the new-release White 2015 and Red 2012 along with some older vintages and suffice to say that while you wouldn’t describe them as classic, there’s no shortage of interest factor.
Sijnn White 2015
Price: R180
74% Chenin Blanc, 23% Viognier and 3% Roussanne. A top note of dried herbs before citrus, peach and some leesy complexity. Good weight with coated acidity and a savoury finish. Has breadth and depth – full of exotic flavour.
#WinemagRating: 92/100.
Sijnn Red 2012
Price: R250
59% Syrah, 25% Touriga Nacional, 10% Mourvèdre, 6% Trincadeira. Red and black fruit, fynbos, spice and earth on the nose. Layers of flavour and hardly short of heft but perhaps not quite as rich and full as some previous vintages.
#WinemagRating: 91/100.
