Sijnn White 2018

By , 25 August 2020

Sijnn is the property in Malgas established by David Trafford of De Trafford some 45km south of Swellendam and not far from the mouth of the Breede River. 2018 was the fourth vintage made onsite by resident winemaker Charla Haasbroek and there is a sense that all involved are really starting to understand the terroir.

The White 2018 is a blend of 70% Chenin Blanc, 17% Viognier and 13% Roussanne, matured for 10 months in French oak, 10% new. The nose shows stone fruit, dried herbs, earth and spice plus some yeasty complexity while the palate is rich and full with punchy acidity and a deeply savoury finish. It’s hugely expressive without being ingratiating or ostentatious. Price: R300 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 94/100.
