Slanghoek Legends Barrel Fermented Chenin Blanc 2015

The stuff of.

Breedekloof winery Slanghoek today hosted brunch at Constantia restaurant Foxcroft, which recently won Retail Capital New Restaurant of the Year at the Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Restaurant Awards. And so the likes of carbonated Vonkel Brut with poached oysters and Vin Doux with rose and coconut panna cotta. All great fun.

The most serious pairing of the day was the Slanghoek Legends Chenin Blanc 2015 (R190 a bottle) with confit pork belly.

Fermented and matured for 16 months in 100% new French oak, this is Slanghoek’s attempt at the big time. On the nose, aromas of pear, yellow apple and white peach, just a little yeasty complexity and definite vanilla. The palate is rich – good fruit concentration, bright acidity, the finish gently savoury – not at all an undistinguished effort but all that oak a little jarring.
