Southern Right Pinotage 2014

“2014 was a lighter vintage and Pinotage plays well to this,” says Anthony Hamilton Russell, co-owner of the Southern Right brand, his point being that given the variety’s abundant fruit and firm tannins, less can be more. If the 2013 vintage with its 20% new oak and 14.21% abv was just a bit foursquare (see here), the 2014 with no new oak and an abv of 13.84% is better resolved.
Red cherry, raspberry, fynbos and even a touch of mint (“Vicks” to quote Hamilton Russell’s daughter, Ella) on the nose. The palate, meanwhile, shows pure fruit and fresh acidity before a little earthiness on the finish. A Pinotage of charm rather than shock and awe. Price: R185 a bottle.
#WinemagRating: 91/100.
