Strandveld Adamastor 2009 vs. Oak Valley Mountain Reserve 2009

As an aperitif last night, the Adamastor 2009 from Strandveld in Elim. With lunch today, The OV 2009 from Oak Valley in Elgin. The former a blend of 55% Semillon and 45% Sauvignon Blanc, the latter 81% Sauvignon Blanc and 19% Semillon. The former rated 5 Stars in Platter’s 2011, the latter rated 4½ Stars in Platter’s 2012.

The Adamastor is hardcore – lime and pronounced pyrazine character. Super-intense in flavour with racy acidity and a saline finish. Particular which is to say that one could begin to speak of terroir but actually quite difficult to drink (the 2011 rated 2½ Stars in the RisCura White Hot Wine Awards last year).

The Mountain Reserve more refined – white peach, thatch, some lanolin, a little white pepper on the back-palate. Less particular but more accessible, more versatile when it comes to food (3 Stars in the White Hot Wine Awards).

Tolerance of pyrazine varies from taster to taster but I prefer less rather than more. Forgive me for banging my drum once again…
