Ellerman House, the luxury Bantry Bay hotel, has collaborated with winemaker Erika Obermeyer, previously of Graham Beck, to make a bespoke red blend called simply The Ellerman, maiden vintage being 2018, this set to sell for R850 a bottle.
Consisting of 59% Syrah, 20% Grenache, 15% Cinsault and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced variously from Stellenbosch, Paarl and the Voor-Paardeberg, the wine was matured for some 14 months in French oak, 15% new.
The nose shows cherries and red currant as well as some white pepper, dried herbs and some floral fragrance while the palate is medium bodied with racy, pleasantly tart acidity and soft tannins, while the finish is appealing dry. A well balanced and elegant offering.
CE’s rating: 92/100.

Hello Christian, what are the credentials for this wine to claim a retail price tag of R850??? It’s no Paul Sauer, no Columella or many other wines which have earned some rights to be in the super premium category. Thanks.

Has Ellerman opened a wine shop? Or a home-delivery service? Or do we need to book a room to taste Erika’s wine?

If you need a room, that will make it for a super expensive wine!!!! I will look for something else.
