The Foundry Grenache Blanc 2017

Spot on.

Boy, did I catch some flak when I suggested that the Grenache Blanc 2015, White Wine of the Year in Platter’s 2018, might have benefited from being a little drier (see here). The 2017 is now out and I think it’s a better realized wine.

From Voor Paardeberg grapes, the wine was fermented and matured in older French oak barrels. The nose is intricate and alluring with notes of pear, apple, citrus and peach to go with some floral perfume, yellow earth and spice. The palate is utterly seamless with pure fruit, coated acidity and a gently savoury finish. Super-complex and just so balanced. The alcohol is 13.5% and the RS, for what it’s worth, is 3.55g/l compared to 5.1g/l in the case of the 2015 (no 2016 made). Wine Cellar price: R200 a bottle.

Editor’s rating: 95/100.
