As we all hunker down in order to defeat the Coronavirus pandemic, you have to wonder how Chris Williams is feeling about his decision last year to leave Stellenbosch property Meerlust and concentrate full-time on his The Foundry project. His new releases, at least, will make for great post-isolation drinking.
The Foundry Grenache Blanc 2019
Price: R220
W.O. Voor Paardeberg. Subtle and elusive aromatics with notes of flowers, white peach and green apple. The palate displays remarkable fruit purity, arresting acidity and a pithy finish. Tightly wound and wonderfully clear cut.
CE’s rating: 94/100.
The Foundry Viognier 2019
Price: R230
W.O. Stellenbosch. Peach, yellow apple and even some sweet melon on the nose. Relatively broad with seemingly quite moderate acidity. Plenty of fruit upfront, this should please fans of the variety.
CE’s rating: 90/100.
The Foundry Roussanne 2018
Price: R230
W.O. Stellenbosch. A muted nose with hints of naartjie and stone fruit to go with a slight herbal quality and some waxy character. The palate is marked by dense fruit and a great line of acidity before a savoury finish. Has a nice richness about it.
CE’s rating: 93/100.

Some of the finest in the “other than Sauv Banc & Chardonnay” category. Keep it up Chris!
