The Foundry Roussanne 2016
By Christian Eedes, 26 September 2017
Local plantings of Roussanne went from 11ha in 2006 to 75.5ha at the end of 2016, it’s propagation here presumably on account of its propensity to perform well in hot climate conditions as demonstrated in the southern Rhône appellation of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
The Foundry is the own label of Meerlust winemaker Chris Williams and his Roussanne 2016 is delicious. Grapes from a Stellenbosch vineyard, fermentation involved partial innoculation in older barrels before maturation lasting seven months.
The nose shows pear, white peach, earth and dried herbs. On the palate, pure fruit and fresh acidity before a long and pithy finish. Great depth of flavour and very focused. Approximate retail price: R185 a bottle.
Editor’s rating: 94/100.
