The Giant Periwinkle Blanc Fumé 2015

Pierre Rabie, an advocate by profession, makes wines on a small scale under The Giant Periwinkle label. The stand out in the range is the Blanc Fumé made from Elim grapes, fermentation begun in tank and finished in fourth-fill barrel, maturation lasting six to nine months

While the 2014 was refined and unshowy (see here), the 2015 is the antithesis. Incredibly expressive on nose and palate with notes of flowers, fresh herbs, apple, granadilla and pineapple. The palate is super-concentrated and yet the acidity is crazy-fresh. Nothing if not arresting.Price: R200 a bottle.

#WinemagRating: 92/100.

Cool wine, that. I found it very blackcurranty in December.

Hi Kwispedoor, I’ve had two bottles in recent times. On the first occasion, I also found plenty of blackcurrant but on the second occasion, when it was tasted next to the 2014, less so. As we all know, so much of wine appreciation is situational…

Absolutely. Not to mention bottle variation, extra time in the bottle and Sauvignon’s capricious nature during its first while in the bottle. I’m sure those currants will emerge in different ways as it matures.
