The Giant Periwinkle Blanc Fumé 2016
By Christian Eedes, 5 June 2017
Pierre Rabie, an advocate by profession, pleads the case of wooded Sauvignon in his spare time – he’s made his Blanc Fum
é
from Elim grapes since the 2013 vintage and his 2016 is his best yet.
Barrel fermented and matured in old oak for some five months, the nose shows a top note of dried herbs before white peach, grapefruit and black currant. The palate shows super-concentrated fruit and riveting acidity before a savoury finish. Just as expressive as the 2015, it seems that much better balanced. Price: R200 a bottle.
Editor’s rating: 94/100.
