The Old Vine Series Skerpioen 2016
By Christian Eedes, 4 August 2017
The 2016 vintage was hot and dry and this wine from a Swartland field blend of Chenin Blanc and Palomino planted between 1958 and 1967 appears a little more rounded out than some of its predecessors. The nose shows top notes of herbs and talcum powder before citrus, white peach and apple. The palate has a winning plumpness about it – great fruit concentration offset by lemon-like acidity with a little phenolic grip on the finish. Beautifully balanced irrespective of the challenges climatic conditions posed. Approximate retail price: R280 a bottle.
Editor’s rating: 93/100.
