The trophy winner in Class 13 – Other Reds, Full Bodied at last year’s Six Nations Wine Challenge was the Meta Matarao 2017 from Schwarz Wine Co. in Barossa Valley, Australia. This class includes Pinotage and the only example of this variety to win double gold was the Reserve 2015 from The View in British Columbia, Canada!
Challenge director Ross Anderson gave me a bottle on a recent trip to Australia and it
makes for fascinating drinking. The nose is most alluring with notes of red cherry, rose water, incense and spice while the palate is light bodied (alcohol: 13.6%) with clean fruit, fresh acidity and fine tannins. Stylistically, it recalls what SA’s new-wave producers are trying to do with the variety. Price: C$27.95 (equivalent to approximately R295) a bottle.
Editor’s rating: 90/100.

A Canadian pinotage winning double gold! Now that’s fascinating news to me. I wonder which of SA’s pinotages were included in the competition? Regardless, I wasn’t even aware that pinotage was being vinified in Canada.
