Thelema Merlot 2016
By Christian Eedes, 15 May 2019
The drought-affected 2016 vintage was one to test the mettle of producers and it seems that the winemaking team at Thelema handled it with aplomb when it comes to the standard-label Merlot.
Grapes from vineyards planted in 1998 and 2000, maturation lasted 18 months in French oak, 30% new. The nose shows red and black fruit, a hint of fresh herbs and attractive oak spice while the palate is particularly well balanced with clean fruit, fresh acidity and crunchy tannins. Alcohol: 14.5%. Wine Cellar price: R190 a bottle.
Editor’s rating: 91/100.
