Tokara Limited Release Pinotage 2014

The Pinotage from Stellenbosch cellar Tokara first came to light for me when the 2007 vintage was judged best in class at the 2010 Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show. That wine famously had an alcohol of over 15% and subsequent vintages have been in the same vein perhaps tending to be a bit overdone.

The current-release Limited Release 2014 (R315 a bottle) is by no means a shrinking violet – 22 months in 100% new oak and an alcohol of 14.5% on the label – but hangs together well. The nose shows cherries and plums plus vanilla, cinnamon and other spice. The palate meanwhile possesses plenty of juicy fruit, fresh acidity and fine tannins. It’s a bold, confident take on this sometimes tricky variety. Total production: 1 400 bottles.

#WinemagRating: 90/100.
