Van Loggerenberg new releases

By , 27 November 2017

Lukas van Loggerenberg’s maiden releases from the 2016 vintage late last year heralded him as something of an instant star (see here). He now has two follow-up wines from the 2017 vintage out and again they don’t disappoint.

Van Loggerenberg Break-a-Leg 2017
Approximate retail price: R130
A Blanc de Noir from Paarl Cinsaut. Matured for nine months in old oak. Pale copper in colour, this is all about delicacy and understatement. On the nose, subtle notes of citrus, red apple and wild strawberry plus hints of herbs and spice. The palate is extraordinarily light and fresh with a bone-dry finish making for a very refreshing glass of wine.

Editor’s rating: 88/100.

Van Loggerenberg Geronimo 2017

Soaring.

Van Loggerenberg Geronimo 2017
Approximate retail price: R265
From Cinsaut, 60% sourced  from Stellenbosch and 40% from Paarl. Around 80% whole-bunch fermentation and matured in older oak. On the nose, notes of red cherry and raspberry plus hints of fynbos, earth and spice. Great fruit purity, fresh acidity and lovely crunchy tannins – perhaps a little more refined and delicate than the 2016 but this still manages to avoid being too “thin”.

Editor’s rating: 93/100.
