Constantia Glen winemaker Justin van Wyk recently launched two of his own, the Van Wyk Family Wines label depicting a ram as Van Wyk hails from a Karoo sheep farm and three daffodils, a homage to the Welsh heritage of his wife and two daughters. Tasting notes and ratings as follows:

Van Wyk Chenin Blanc 2016
Price: R220
90% Chenin Blanc from Breedekloof vineyard planted in 1980, 10% Riesling from Stellenbosch. Matured for six months in third-fill barrels. Yellow fruit, some yeasty complexity, earth and subtle spice on the nose. Rich and broad on the palate with moderate acidity and a savoury finish.

43% Chenin Blanc from Breedekloof, 26% Chardonnay from Montagu, 26% Riesling from Stellenbosch, 5% Viognier from Constantia. On the nose, citrus and white peach with floral perfume and spice in the background. The palate shows concentrated fruit and fresh acidity. An idiosyncratic offering – the unusual combination of varieties providing plenty of interest.
