Vergelegen Reserve Merlot 2013

Good to go.

Is the general punter set to see a Vergelegen red in its first flush of youth ever again? The Reserve Merlot 2013 generally available in the trade (approximate price: R260 a bottle) is good but already shows some developed character.

Matured in French oak, total production was 45 500 bottles. The nose shows oyster shell, red and black fruit, violets and dried herbs as well as a little undergrowth. The palate shows good fruit density and coated acidity, the tannins already starting to mellow. It’s well balanced with layers of flavour and a gently savoury finish – drink now or over the next two years.

Editor’s rating: 90/100.
