The 2008 has a reputation of being a difficult vintage on account of being marred by rain but did offer the benefit of being unusually cool. Nothing wrong with the V 2008 from Somerset West property Vergelegen, which still shows particular concentration and structure (alcohol is 14.5%).

Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, it was matured for 20 months in French oak, 100% new. The nose shows red and black berries plus tobacco, tomato leaf and dried herbs plus a hint of oak spice. The palate, meanwhile, displays a good core of fruit while there’s still some tannic grip in evidence.

CE’s rating: 92/100.
