The Legend Collection from Paarl cellar Windmeul celebrates Theuns Briers, who played wing for the Springboks against the British Lions in 1955 and New Zealand in 1956 and was a former director of the company.

Grapes from a certified 1974 vineyard. Fermented in barrel. Exotic aromatics of apple, dried peach, mango and pineapple plus vanilla and baking spice. The palate is powerful – there’s an impression of sweetness on entry while the texture is thick and creamy. Lots of flavour but some might consider this a bit listless. Total production: 400 bottles.

Matured for 18 months in French oak, 100% new. The nose shows cherries, plums and banana bread plus subtle vanilla and oak spice. The palate is rich, hearty and packed with flavour – excellent fruit expression, bright acidity and fine tannins. Plenty of heft (alcohol is 14.5%) but equally very well balanced. Total production: 500 bottles.
