Egon Müller-Scharzhof Scharzhofberger Riesling Auslese 1993

Serious drinking.

Serious drinking.

As has become tradition, my family and I opened some top wines during the course of New Year’s Eve dinner, perhaps the most memorable being Scharzhofberger Auslese 1993 from esteemed Mosel producer Egon Müller.

Sweet and rich with some botrytis character adding extra interest, but also crackling acidity ensuring great vigour. I’m afraid a more detailed tasting note was not forthcoming (it was a celebration, after all) but suffice to say we don’t make Riesling like this in SA. It was profoundly good and was I to have scored it, it would have been well into the late 90s – another reminder that for all the improvement that our new-generation wines show, we must be careful not to over-estimate their quality.

Let that last sentence be a caveat for all of us this year.
