Un-flashy.

Yesterday a bottle of Grangehurst Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2003 during lunch with François Rautenbach, head of the Premier Wine programme for Singita Private Game Reserve after fulfilling our responsibilities on the panel for this year’s Nedbank Green Wine Awards.

A classic vintage from a producer resolutely classic in style, the wine showed dark fruit, bright acidity and firm but fine tannins – austere and essentially savoury rather than sweet. “Give this to me blind and I’d know it was from South Africa rather than Bordeaux,” I said. “Very nice,” replied Rautenbach, “but only East Coast Americans are going to like it…” referring to what Singita guests tend to favour.
