Do awards stickers sell wine? Well, I noticed the Syrah 2010 from Franschhoek property bearing a Shiraz SA Wine Challenge decal selling for R98.99 a bottle at Liquor City Claremont and was consequently intrigued to try it. It’s a blend of 96% Shiraz and 4% Viognier and the wine was matured in 94% French and 6% American oak for 24 months, 12% new.

Very ripe black fruit, floral perfume, dried herbs, some black pepper – it’s unmistakably Shiraz. Rich and full, a touch sweet, relatively thick textured, moderate acidity. Some tannic grip kicks in right at the end and prevents it from being entirely facile. Flavourful but not very detailed.

Score: 86/100.

    Love the label.

Some of the best livery around. Working hard on wine packaging awards – long overdue in SA. Any sponsorship ideas welcome.

Hi Christian. Thanks for trying the wine. Just a correction – this is the 2010 – 2011 to be released in November. The sticker worked as the wine sold out in a few months.

      Vintage corrected.
