Leeuwenkuil Family Reserve White 2011

A promising debut.

Leeuwenkuil Family Vineyards in the Swartland sees some 1 000ha under cultivation, the main focus of activities to date being bulk wine but also supplying grapes to some of the area’s hotshot independent winemakers. Now comes the release of four wines under its own label and very likeable they are, too.

Leeuwenkuil Chenin Blanc 2011: 15/20
Approximate retail price: R40
Peach and pine-apple on the nose and palate. Not overly complex but overtly fruity and eminently drinkable. Great value!

Leeuwenkuil Shiraz 2011: 15/20
Approximate retail price: R55
Red fruit and a fragrant fynbos note on the nose. The palate is light bodied with clean fruit and good freshness. No real oak character to speak of. Rather pretty although some might consider it insubstantial.

Leeuwenkuil Family Reserve White 2011: 16/20
Approximate retail price: R55
50% Chenin Blanc, 20% Roussanne, 16% Grenache Blanc, 10% Clairette Blanche, 4% Verdelho. Peach, hint of nuttiness and spice on the nose and palate. Medium bodied and well balanced. Not too thick textured, really lively acidity. Will reward bottle maturation.

Leeuwnkuil Family Reserve Red 2011: 15/20
Approximate retail price: R60
85% Shiraz, 6% Mourvèdre, 5% Grenache, 4% Cinsaut. Closed on the nose and palate. Vague aromas of dark fruit, fynbos and spice. The palate shows plenty of concentrated fruit but is somewhat lacking in nuance. May open up with time in bottle.

I received December 2010 some of their first vintages bottled from the winemaker himself. The wine was really good.

The dreyers is awesome people and i hope their label just gets stronger and stronger.
