Pizza features regularly on our family menu – quick to make, reliably satisfying. The ideal wine in this context? Something flavourful but not attention-seeking and the Family Red Blend from Joostenberg in Paarl fits the brief perfectly.
Consisting of 67% Syrah, 19% Mourvèdre, 9% Grenache Noir and 5% Touriga Nacional, it was matured for nine months in old oak and stainless steel. Appealing aromatics of potpourri, red berries, cured meat and spice while the palate is medium bodied (alc: 13%) with fresh acidity and not overly assertive tannins, the finish gently savoury. Price: R195 a bottle.
