What to do with Viognier.

The main benefit of wine exhibitions for me is not the opportunity to check out the hot 30-something female professionals these events seem to attract, but rather to discover wines I might not ordinarily come across. Yesterday at the Wade Bales Wine Festival, the Avondale Cyclus 2009, a blend of 60% Viognier and the balance made up of Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and Semillon, which underwent spontaneous fermentation, 60% spending 10 months in 500-litre barrels, the rest in tank. An arresting wine with both length and breadth and a wide range of flavours including baked apple and spice.

    I’m torn, actually. Ag, who am I kidding? The hot 30-something ladies win, hands down. I do however try my best to taste as much wine as possible at these events, despite being slowed down by my instantly weakened knees.
