JH Meyer Palmiet Chardonnay 2017

By , 29 January 2019

Johan “Stompie” Meyer admits to something of a love affair with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, making small batches from various sites, sourcing only organic fruit. Tasting notes and ratings as follows:

JH Meyer Palmiet Chardonnay 2017

Bulked up.

JH Meyer Palmiet Chardonnay 2017
Approximate retail price: R205
From Elgin grapes. A hint of reduction before lime and lemon plus some oatmeal. The palate shows pure fruit and zingy acidity before a pithy finish. Flavourful and relatively rich compared to previous vintages, hence more successful to my mind. Alcohol: 13.5%.

Editor’s rating: 93/100.

JH Meyer Carbonic Pinot Noir 2017
Approximate retail price: R190
From Elgin grapes. The nose shows red cherry, raspberry, herbs and musk. The palate is light with fresh, lemon-like acidity and very grippy tannins. Sexy rather than profound. Alcohol: 12.5%

Editor’s rating: 88/100.

JH Meyer No Sulphur Pinot Noir 2017
Approximate retail price: R190
From Elgin, Hemel-en-Aarde and Elandskloof grapes. 100% whole-bunch fermented as for the next two wines. The nose shows black cherry and musk while the palate is relatively rich and full (given an alcohol of just 12.5%) with coated acidity and smooth tannins, the finish nicely savoury. A very pleasing drop.

Editor’s rating: 90/100.

JH Meyer Palmiet Pinot Noir 2017
Approximate retail price: R255
From Elgin grapes. A fragrant nose with notes of red fruit, incense, earth and spice. Light and fresh with fine tannins, the finish very dry. Elegant and understated.

Editor’s rating: 91/100.

JH Meyer Elands Rivier Pinot Noir 2017
Approximate retail price: R255
From Elandskloof grapes. Cherries and plums on the nose. Relatively rich with smooth tannins. Nice enough but perhaps lacks a bit of detail.

Editor’s rating: 89/100.
