“Treinspoor” is the name that Eben Sadie gives his Tinta Barocca within the Old Vine Series, a wine made from a Swartland vineyard planted in 1974 and the 2014 vintage is the best yet.

Nothing shy about the nose with notes of dark berries, flowers, spice, white pepper and even a gamey, almost animal quality. Lovely fruit concentration, fresh acidity and prickly tannins. There’s also a little earthiness before a saline finish. Immensely characterful. Price: R205 a bottle from Wine Cellar.

Winemag rating: 92/100.
