Prescient Cape White Blend Report 2020: Top 10
By Christian Eedes, 18 June 2020
This year’s Cape White Blend Report convened by winemag.co.za and sponsored by multinational financial services company Prescient is now out. There were 20 entries from 17 producers and these were tasted blind (labels out of sight) by a three-person panel, scoring done according to the 100-point quality scale.
What is a Cape White Blend?
No official definition exists but our proposal is that such wines can be made from any combination of varieties as long as they include a significant Chenin Blanc component, specifically more than 15% and less than 85%.
The 10 best wines overall were as follows:
Cavalli Cremello 2017
DeMorgenzon Maestro White 2017
Eenzaamheid Vin Blanc 2019
Essay Chenin Blanc Viognier Roussanne 2019
Joostenberg Fairhead 2019
Lammershoek Terravinum Reserve White 2016
Lammershoek’s White Mysteries 2017
The Tea Leaf 2018 (Strange Kompanjie)
The Fledge & Co. Vagabond 2018
Van Wyk Family Wines Olivia Grace 2018
What areas to the fore?
Congratulations to Swartland property Lammershoek on having two wines in the Top 10. Of the others, three were designated as Wine of Origin Western Cape and one as Coastal Region indicating that some producers are compelled to search quite widely for suitable grapes to make up these blends.
What do top Cape White Blends go for?
The average of the top 10 this year is R168.50 a bottle with Essay Chenin Blanc Viognier Roussanne 2019 from MAN Family Wines the most affordable at R85 a bottle.
