20 entries is woeful but appreciate that times are tough and you can’t force producers to enter nor can you run it as a charity event. On a more positive note I’d like to sing the praises of the Essay – rarely have I been as pleasantly surprised by a sub R100 wine as this one. Its fantastic value for money. This is the main reason why I enjoy these reports Christian – there is always a giant slayer in the mix, sometimes two. And this provides great insight to consumers in general especially in these financially difficult times. Even the well heeled readers of this site would have to admit not everybody can afford R200+ for a bottle of wine – you just reinforce the fact that even if you can you don’t have to spend that much.

Hi Rob, Entry into the tastings that form the basis of these reports costs R950 per wine and participation is at the discretion of the individual producer – Sadie and Mullineux typically don’t enter competitions. winemag.co.za takes a hybrid approach to generating ratings, combining the outcome of sighted tastings conducted by me as editor on an ad hoc basis with the more formal findings that are generated by a three-person panel tasting blind. We acknowledge that there are certain producers that feel their offering is so refined and particular that only a sighted tasting will do but these have historically been a loss-leading activity and we invite reader contributions to cover this. Conversely, we hugely appreciate the boldness of those producers that are prepared to submit to the extra scrutiny of a blind tasting where no bias is at play.

Hi Christian,
Any particular reason for not revealing the individual scores of the Top-10 wines, or am I just not looking well enough?
Very disappointing turnout having just 20 wines in this category considering the amazing wines available, Palladius arguably the finest of them all.

Hi Tierseun, Our annual tasting programme going forwards will culminate in a gala dinner where the ratings on the 100-point quality scale for all the Top 10 wines will be revealed and the individual best wine per category will receive an award, the idea being to lend the awards circuit some extra razzmatazz.
