Chateau Libertas Limited Edition Cabernet Sauvignon Cinsault 2021
By Christian Eedes, 13 October 2022
To honour Francis “Duimpie” Bayly, one of South Africa’s most distinguished wine personalities, who died last year, producer-wholesaler Distell have launched a limited-edition wine under the Chateau Libertas label.
Consisting of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Cinsault, the former was matured for some 12 months in first-, second- and third-fill barrels while the latter was matured in concrete. Only 2 800 magnums (price: R900) and a small batch of standard 750ml bottles (R450) are being released – the Chateau Libertas brand celebrates its 90th anniversary this year and the magnums are packaged in a commemorative wooden box – purchases can be made via Vinoteque.co.za. Commentator Michael Fridjhon, Bennie Howard, one of the first Cape Wine Masters and I gave input on the blend so no rating.
Proceeds are going to the establishment of a centre to be situated on the historic Welgevallen farm that will function as a repository of wine knowledge, the University of Stellenbosch on board to assist with set-up.
