Local wines to win category trophies at this year’s International Wine & Spirit Competition were as follows:
Constantia Glen Five 2015 – Top blended red wine
Kanonkop 2006 – Top Cabernet Sauvignon
Stellenrust Barrel Fermented 2018 – Top Chenin Blanc
Waitrose 2017 (Cederberg) – Top Shiraz/Syrah

The variation in scores and preferences of individual judges is rather amazing. I’m a big fan of the Constantia Glen Five and therefore far from objective, but to illustrate my point:
– It received the trophy and a score of 96 from a panel at this competition.
– It also received platinum and a score of 97 at the equally prestigious Decanter World Wine Awards.
– A credible 93 points from Tim Atkin
– 88 points from winemag
I don’t know which score should hold more sway than another, but ultimately I guess it’s in eye/taste of the beholder.
