Steve Tanzer rates the 2011 CWG Auction wines

Steve Tanzer of US publication International Wine Cellar recently announced his ratings of the wines to be sold at this year’s Cape Winemakers Guild auction. Tanzer’s top scoring wine on 94 points is the Ernie Els CWG 2009 followed by Waterford Estate 2009 Auction Reserve BB on 93 points.

His highest scoring white wines, all on 92 points were Cape Point Vineyards Barrel Fermented Sauvignon Blanc 2010, Groot Constantia CWG White 2010, a blend of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc, Edgebaston Chardonnay “Tete du Ciel” 2009, Jordan Chardonnay Auction Reserve 2010, and Rijk’s CWG Chenin Blanc 2010. The fortified Graham Beck Three Thousand and One Nights Muscat de Frontignan, the 2001 also received 93 points.

Tanzer scored in a band of 87 to 94 on the 100-point scale and he gave 34 of the 44 wines he  tasted 90 points or more. His rating system is explained here.
