The Cape Winemakers Guild Auction represents a carefully curated collection of limited-release wines made by some of South Africa’s leading producers. Inclusion in the auction is itself a mark of distinction. My ratings, based on a sighted tasting, are an independent assessment of the individual wines and are intended to complement, rather than replicate, the Guild’s own selection process.

Hi Christian, a number of wineries have included ‘Auction’ or CWG in the name of the wine e.g. Boschkloof, Hamilton-Russell, Le Riche and so on. In a few cases, e.g. Erika Obermeyer, one wine includes ‘Auction’ whereas another doesn’t. As far as you know, are these auction references a courtesy or do they denote a special auction cuvee?

    • Christian Eedes | 26 August 2026

Hi Vernon, I’d suggest it’s a bit of both. In some instances, the wine is a barrel selection of a regular bottling, while in others, the CWG or Auction designation is intended to emphasise that it is a special release not available through normal commercial channels.

  • Vian Gericke | 26 August 2026

Donovan Rall is sure racking up the 99’s, now receiving his 3rd from Christian. All the more impressive when you consider Christian has only reached for 99 points four times, ever!
