Judging for this year’s Concours Mondial du Sauvignon is taking place in Styria, Austria. Yesterday a visit to LacknerTinnacher outside the village of Gamlitz for a tasting of some of the estate’s various single-vineyard examples of Sauvignon Blanc. Unlike South Africa, absolutely no talk about pyrazines versus thiols. When I asked winemaker Katharina Tinnacher about this, she replied that the beauty of Sauvignon for her was how well it transmitted terroir. “I’m far more interested in making authentic wine which reflects soil and vintage than what might be considered the technically best wine,” she said. The next step for the variety in SA?
