Best SA white and red of 2010: the people’s choice

It’s that time of year when “Best of” lists prevail prompting me to ask the question on Facebook and Twitter as to your best SA white and red wine of the year. Over 40 people have voted so far, providing some interesting insights along the way.
Most popular category out of the whites was blends with 45% of the vote followed by Chenin Blanc with 29% of the vote, while most popular red category was Shiraz with 27% of the vote followed by blends and Pinot Noir which both got 22% of the vote.
Obviously, the sample involved here is too small to be statistically valid plus what must also be accepted is that those who participated would all have a relatively high involvement in the subject of wine. Even so, if you’ve ever wondered about the target market for multi-varietal oxidative white blends then it seems safe to conclude that a good proportion of it is made up by thirty-something hipsters with smart phones.
Below are the wines nominated (vintages not always supplied):

I don’t understand what the fuss is about. Surely there are better Chardonnays on offer? I haven’t tasted it myself but I think if this wine was any good it would’ve done better in the respected John Platter guide? 4 Stars might not be bad but they way the supporters carry on one would think this wine was converted from water to wine by the big Man himself.

never heard of bartinney chardonnay! How about Kleine Zalze bush vines chenin blanc & Kleine Zalze gamay noir (red) yum….oh and don’t forget Altydgedacht Barbera – you south africans need to lose your addiction to Shiraz – especially in the summer for goodness sakes! And I am a ambassador for neither wine!

What a fantastic list!
If there are any restaurant people reading this post, it would be a great way to start compiling a restaurant wine list from the wines above. In fact it would be an excellent addition to any food establishment!
