A.A. Badenhorst Family Wines White 2013 and Red 2013

By , 2 November 2015

With Adi Badenhorst making some of the most off-the-wall wines in the Swartland, it’s curious to think that he used to work at that bastion of the establishment Rustenburg. His flagship white and red aren’t that esoteric relative to some of the other stuff that he does but you wouldn’t call them mainstream either. Tasting and notes and scores for current-releases as follows:

A.A. Badenhorst White 2013 and Red 2013

Rad.

A.A. Badenhorst White 2013
Wine Cellar price: R275
35% Chenin Blanc, 10% Grenache Blanc, 9% Roussanne, 9% Viognier, 8% Verdelho, 8% Marsanne, 7% White Grenache, 7% Clairette Blanche, 5% Palomino and 2% Chardonnay. A top note of potpourri before citrus and white peach plus spice and some earthiness. Quite lean yet deeply flavoured on the palate. Savoury throughout with some phenolic grip on the finish. Very striking.

#WinemagRating: 93/100.

A.A. Badenhorst Red 2013
Wine Cellar price: R275
68% Shiraz, 18% Grenache, 10% Cinsaut and 4% Tinta Barocca. Red and black fruit, fynbos and some earth on the nose. Good fruit definition, bright acidity and crunchy tannins, the finish possessing a salty edge. Lighter than the 2012 but wonderfully composed – very good but perhaps not quite as outstanding as some other reds from the district.

#WinemagRating: 92/100.
