A.A. Badenhorst White 2015
By Christian Eedes, 23 February 2017
It doesn’t get more involved than the White 2015 from Swartland producer A.A. Badenhorst Family Wines, a blend consisting of 20% Chenin Blanc, 13% each of Clairette, Roussanne and Verdelho, 9% each of Grenache Blanc and Grenache Gris, 8% Marsanne, 7% Viognier, 5% Semillon and 3% Palomino.
The end result is compelling. Aromatics of citrus and peach plus flowers, dried herbs and gravel road dustiness while the palate has a great purity about it without being overtly fruity – it comes across as very deftly made with none of those components there by accident. Nothing too easy about it – in fact, it’s quite formidable right now – very tight and savoury – but should mature with benefit. Wine Cellar price: R305 a bottle.
