Secateurs Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon Cinsault 2024
By Christian Eedes, 15 April 2025
Earlier this year, I assembled a selection of single-variety Shiraz, each retailing for under R100, in the hope of uncovering a bargain or two. The exercise proved underwhelming: the wines were, by and large, unremarkable, and I chose not to report on them.
Still, the quest for everyday drinking that won’t stretch the budget continues. A bottle of the 2024 Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon Cinsault under Adi Badenhorst’s Secateurs label, spotted at the local TOPS at SPAR for R132, seemed worth a punt.
It doesn’t disappoint. The nose is enticing with notes of red and black berries, floral perfume, fynbos and white pepper. The palate is balanced and nicely weighted (alcohol at 13.5%), showing pure, unadorned fruit and zippy acidity before finishing properly dry. Slightly over the R100 mark, yes, but delicious and compulsively drinkable.
CE’s rating: 91/100.
