The Estate Blend 2022 from Stellenbosch property Alto is unashamedly plush. A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Shiraz and 10% Cabernet Franc, it was matured for 18 months in French oak barrels, 70% new and has an alcohol of 14.5%.
The nose is very primary at this stage with notes of floral fragrance, some leafiness, red and black berries and vanilla. The palate meanwhile shows luscious fruit and sleek tannins. It’s a well-balanced and extremely polished which you must respect but for a label with such a great legacy, it’s arguably short of some excitement. Price: R450 a bottle.
