Alvi’s Drift Viognier Reserve 2023

By , 19 November 2024

Viognier was South Africa’s 18th most planted variety at the end of last year with 639ha in the ground, the equivalent of 0.7% of the national vineyard. Scherpenheuvel property Alv’s Drift claims to be the largest producer of the variety in bottle and has just launched a Reserve version from the 2023 vintage (R131 a bottle).

Fermentation started in a combination of cement and stainless-steel tanks and finished in barrel, the nose shows peach, nectarine, jasmine, hints of vanilla and spice plus a little struck-match reduction while the palate possesses concentrated fruit and tangy acidity before a savoury finish. It’s a forceful wine but not entirely overdone. Alc: 13.3%.

CE’s rating: 91/100.
