Antares comes from a vineyard established in 2020 on a small farm in the Buffeljags River ward near Swellendam. A field blend of Chenin Blanc, Semillon, and Sauvignon Blanc, it is tended by winemaker Jos van Wyk (Marianne, Stellenbosch) and his father.

The maiden 2023 vintage comprises 63% Chenin Blanc, 23% Semillon, and 14% Sauvignon Blanc, winemaking involving spontaneous fermentation before maturation lasting eight months in a combination of old oak, glass pots and stainless-steel tank.

Alluring aromatics of floral perfume, a hint of fynbos, pear, and lime lead to a palate of exceptional fruit purity, racy acidity, and a bone-dry finish (alc: 12.94%). Poised and precise, it is austere yet strikingly clear in its expression – a wine with the potential to mature beautifully. Price: R420 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 95/100.
