Ataraxia Skin Contact Chardonnay 2020

By , 7 October 2022

Impressed by the Whole Cluster Pinot Noir 2020 from Kevin Grant of Ataraxia recently, I was inclined to have a flutter on the Skin Contact Chardonnay of the same vintage, winemaking involving spontaneous fermentation on the skins before maturation in old oak.

Straw yellow in colour, the nose shows citrus plus some yeasty, nutty notes. The palate, meanwhile, has good fruit concentration, bright acidity and an intensely salty finish. It’s not too grippy, a certain pithiness in evidence. Not for the uninitiated but equally carefully considered and hardly outlandish. Price: R580 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 94/100.
